Plate search
On 27 October 2026, Rubin Observatory announced 2026 ED138, a dwarf-planet candidate beyond Pluto, perhaps 600–1,500 km across. Its earliest known image was from 2016. A day later, my Python pipeline found it on two photographs taken at Palomar Observatory on 3 April 1954.
ED138 passed perihelion in 1926, so in the 1950s it was closer and brighter (magnitude about 18.9), within reach of the first Palomar Sky Survey. Those glass plates were scanned decades ago and are public.
Before ED138, I tested the pipeline on objects with known answers. On four 1954–56 plates of Quaoar it matched JPL's positions to within 0.9″.
On both 1954 plates, a red one of 45 minutes and a blue one of 12, exactly one source was left. It sat on the strip, 0.1″ from its center line, and moved between the two plates as ED138 should. The Minor Planet Center's checker found no other known object there, and an independent re-measurement agreed within 0.2″.
When I contacted the Minor Planet Center, I learned that others had already submitted measurements of the same plates. JPL's updated orbit, which now includes them, puts ED138 within half an arcsecond of my 1954 positions: an independent confirmation that the pipeline got it right. With those and other old images, its record now reaches back to 1937.
I'm now testing the pipeline on other distant objects. We'll see whether anything turns up.
